The old zinc mines at Franklin and Ogdensburg, New Jersey, are world-famous for one reason: their minerals glow. Under ultraviolet light, ordinary-looking gray rock blazes green and red. Known as the “Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World,” the district is preserved by two museums that let visitors collect their own glowing specimens.

Why these rocks glow

The Franklin–Sterling Hill ore bodies formed under unusual conditions that produced a startling variety of zinc and manganese minerals — more than 350 species, around 90 of them fluorescent. The stars are willemite (zinc silicate), which fluoresces a vivid green, and calcite, which glows red, often intergrown so a single rock shows both under a shortwave UV lamp. Franklinite and zincite round out the classic Franklin ore. The glow comes from trace “activator” elements such as manganese locked in the crystal structure.

Two museums, two experiences

The Franklin Mineral Museum maintains the famous Buckwheat Dump, where for a fee you can pick through mine rock and take fluorescent pieces home. The Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg offers underground mine tours, a mineral collecting area, and popular night dig events where you hunt the dumps with UV lamps in the dark. Both are collector institutions rather than wild dig sites — collecting happens on their managed grounds.

Field tip. A daylight Franklin rock can look like dull gray gravel and then blaze under the lamp, so a shortwave UV light is the key tool — longwave alone misses much of the magic. Test pieces in a shaded box or wait for a night dig, and keep the willemite-and-calcite combos that light up green and red together.

How it works

At the Buckwheat Dump you simply pick through the mine rock; at Sterling Hill you tour, then collect. For the full effect, join a scheduled night dig, when the dumps come alive under UV. Bring gloves, a bucket, sturdy shoes and — above all — a shortwave lamp and eye protection for using it. Wrap your best glowing pieces so their edges survive the trip home, and label what you keep while you still remember which dump it came from.

A mining town turned museum

Franklin and Ogdensburg were serious industrial zinc mines for well over a century, working one of the richest zinc deposits in the world before the ore ran out in the 1980s. Rather than let the history vanish, local collectors and the community turned the sites into museums — Sterling Hill preserves the actual underground workings and headframe, while the Franklin museum safeguards the dumps and a renowned local mineral collection. That is why collecting here feels different from a wild dig: you are picking through the tailings of a genuine historic mine, under the care of people determined to keep its story alive.

Getting there

Both sites are in Sussex County in northwestern New Jersey, only a few miles apart — Franklin on Route 23 and Ogdensburg just to the south — roughly an hour and a quarter from the George Washington Bridge. Each museum has its own parking, indoor galleries and gift shop, so the two make an easy combined day. Check which one is running a collecting session or night dig on the day you plan to visit.

When to go

The museums run spring through fall, with special fluorescent events (and the big annual mineral shows) drawing collectors from around the world. Night digs, the real highlight, are scheduled on select evenings — check each museum’s calendar for tour times and dig dates before you travel, and dress warmly, since the dumps get cool after dark.
